People often use magnets to absorb stainless steel plate materials to verify their quality and authenticity. If the 304L stainless steel plate is non-attractive and non-magnetic, it is considered to be good; otherwise, it is considered to be a fake. In fact, this is an unrealistic identification method.

There are many types of stainless steel, which can be divided into austenitic and martensite or ferrite according to their organizational structure at room temperature. The austenitic type of 310S stainless steel plate is non-magnetic or weakly magnetic, and the martensitic or ferritic type is magnetic. However, this is not necessarily the case. For example, the austenitic 304 stainless steel plate commonly used for decorative tube sheets is generally non-magnetic. However, magnetism may occur due to fluctuations in chemical composition caused by smelting or different processing conditions. This cannot be considered counterfeit or unqualified. . In addition, after cold working of 304 stainless steel, the organizational structure will also transform to Martensite. The greater the cold working deformation, the more martensitic transformation, and the greater the magnetism of the steel. On the contrary, the lower quality 200 series stainless steel is very likely to be non-magnetic, so it would be wrong to judge that it is genuine stainless steel.
